Evan Smoak is the Nowhere Man! When he is reached by the very desperate, he can and will do anything to save them.
In the course of rescuing someone, Evan is captured by a sociopath, drugged, and taken to a remote location which is heavily guarded.
He attempts to outwit and overpower his captor at every opportunity which leads to many suspenseful and pulse racing scenes. A game of cat and mouse ensues Evan Smoak is back and what a ride!
A game of cat and mouse ensues where we witness him using the numerous skills taught to him as a youngster in the Orphan programme.
An exceptional ending that leaves us wanting more. Gregg Hurwitz fails to disappoint and I can hardly wait to read his next thriller starring Evan Smoak!
Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for an advanced readers copy. View all 13 comments. I loved the first book in Evan Smoak series so I was really looking forward to reading this one.
And it is good, it's really good but The Nowhere Man doesn't seem as tight or cleverly crafted as Orphan X.
The plot moves at a slower pace and is a bit less believable than in the first book. Overall though it's an intriguing and twisty read and I'll definitely be continuing with the series.
View 2 comments. Gawrsh, however will Evan get out of this scrape?! A lot of that has to do with the rather spare story.
The narrative is slow and overlong. The two people in need of The Nowhere Man are continually mentioned throughout but are dealt with each in a handful of pages at the end very anticlimactically.
The book definitely has some fine moments though. Not all the escape attempts are dull and the final one is pretty damn entertaining. Like the first Orphan X, The Nowhere Man is a decent action novel with enough fun scenes dotted throughout to never become overwhelmingly tedious.
Certainly nothing special - for fans of the genre only. The Nowhere Man was a slow read. I loved Orphan X and was very excited for the sequel.
The Nowhere Man starts out strong, but soon the plot decelerates and sadly never speeds up again. Smoak tackles too many villains, and I thought he would never escape from the Chateau where he is imprisoned.
Some editing down of this section would have been very helpful. Aug 10, Carolyn rated it it was amazing Shelves: suspense , netgalley , thriller , , netgalley Whoa, talk about high octane thrills!
Evan Smoak is Jack Reacher on speed! Just when you think he cannot possibly get himself out of the impossible situation he has got himself into, he does and then ends up in an even more impossible situation.
Evan Smoak, previously known as Orphan X in a secret government assassins training program, has left the program but still uses is skills as the Nowhere Man to rescue people in dire need of his services.
Evan is busy doing just that when he is kidnapped b Whoa, talk about high octane thrills! Evan is busy doing just that when he is kidnapped by a crazed madman and his cartel of thugs in a bid to extort money from him and swept away to a secure mountain location.
They have no idea who they have captured but soon find out that this is no ordinary man. Evan can't expect any outside help as the only person he ever loved, his trainer and mentor is dead and he is being hunted by the remaining Orphans still working for the government program.
But Evan is used to relying on himself and his special skills and has many inventive ways of causing mayhem.
I really enjoyed this sequel to Orphan X and the developing character of Evan as he reflects back on his childhood and training while he fights for his life.
Lots of really high octane action, a fantastic finale to the kidnapping and a cliffhanger of an ending that sent me off to find the next instalment.
Sure, most of the action is not believable but it is a lot of fun! With thanks to Netgalley and the publisher St Martin's for a digital copy of the book View all 3 comments.
Nov 03, Kathleen rated it it was ok. My honeymoon with Orphan X is over! In this offering, Evan Smoak is captured, drugged and taken to a remote location.
So—much of the plot involves Evan being tortured—escaping—getting recaptured. Again and again. Hurwitz intersperses the action with flashbacks to his My honeymoon with Orphan X is over!
Hurwitz intersperses the action with flashbacks to his abhorrent childhood and training with Jack. It is all pretty violent and grim.
Jul 24, Dana Moison rated it it was amazing. This was an excellent read. This is the second book in the series, so I already felt more connected to the characters and knew their background.
It was a well-paced action thriller that also projected the main character's inner world, and I enjoyed this combination because I felt the story was told in different levels.
I really like Evan and am rooting for his happiness although it seems so tragically impossible. View 1 comment. Jan 28, Bam cooks the books ;- rated it it was amazing Shelves: netgalley , reads , thriller-suspense.
Evan Smoak was Orphan X--a boy trained in a top-secret government program, groomed to become a lethal weapon, an assassin.
After being asked to kill another operative, Evan decides to leave that life behind and disappear. He becomes the Nowhere Man, the helper of people in trouble.
In book 2, Evan is called upon to help a high school girl being entrapped in a sex trafficking scheme against her will.
After taking care of her problem, he decides to follow through further and find the local house w Evan Smoak was Orphan X--a boy trained in a top-secret government program, groomed to become a lethal weapon, an assassin.
After taking care of her problem, he decides to follow through further and find the local house where the girls were kept before being sent off to buyers.
There he himself is attacked and he awakens to find himself a captive in a plush room in a chateau in the mountains with bars on the balcony window and armed guards at his door.
Who has done this and why? The major portion of this book is spent watching Evan carry out a plan of escape, eliminating his captor's hired muscle one by one.
Remarkable, edge-of-your-seat action with a truly intelligent hero who is flawed and all too human. The touch of humor was missing from this second book.
Instead, Evan begins to face an existential crisis. Is this all his life will ever be? Can he possibly live a normal life with a wife, children?
I like this character very much and thought this thriller was one of the best I've read with its host of evil villains salivating at the chance to get revenge against Evan.
Excellent ending with the punishment fitting the crime! I look forward to reading the next two books in the series.
Highly recommend for lovers of the genre. I wish to thank the publisher for providing me with an ebook copy of this book and the others in the series via NetGalley for my honest review.
View all 8 comments. This was an exciting continuation to the Orphan X series. I enjoyed seeing Evan Smoak develop the tiniest bit more as he continues to operate in his "mission first and only" mindset that has been drilled into him.
Evan is going about rescuing those in trouble as usual whenhe is kidnapped by some super-bad guys and held in a remote location.
Naturally, he must figure out how to escape, which takes up most of the book. It's the complex personal relationships about this series that really interest me, and the way that Evan both craves and avoids them.
The anger and hurt there was very raw. I look forward to seeing this further developed in book three. Entered on screen reader. I had a hard time seeing the villain Solid overall, just not my favorite.
Thanks to NetGalley and publishers for the digital version in exchange for my honest review.
Jan 02, Olivia "So many books--so little time. Anyone who's looking for a thriller filled with action and intrigue won't be disappointed.
Evan Smoak, the Nowhere Man, is abducted. He wakes up not knowing where he is or who his captors are. This book is a real page-turner.
I received this book as an ARC having won it in a Goodreads giveaway. Jan 13, Marialyce rated it really liked it Shelves: net-galley , books-of Forget Rambo, forget Ethan Hunt, forget even Superman for have we have a new hero for you all rolled up in a character, named Evan Smoek in the book Nowhere Man.
This is Gregg Hurwitz's second book featuring Evan and a bevy of bad, really bad people. Having met Evan already in the book Orphan X, and knowing if I was ever in big deep dark trouble, Evan would be the man I would call and have frighting for me.
Those of us who know of Evan's past as a child secreted into a super elite killer force o Forget Rambo, forget Ethan Hunt, forget even Superman for have we have a new hero for you all rolled up in a character, named Evan Smoek in the book Nowhere Man.
Those of us who know of Evan's past as a child secreted into a super elite killer force of orphans, know that any adventures he becomes involved in are dangerous, life threatening, and a ride into a world of darkness and depravity.
Evan is constantly being chased. He is wanted by the group he withdrew from years ago. They want Evan and will pull out all the stops to get him and eliminate the threat he has become.
Evan has been able to hide all while helping one person who is in extreme danger at a time. However, Evan's time as a free man has come to an end.
He is captured, wakes up in a place where his abilities are well known by his cruel guards, and the man who controls them.
If that is not bad enough, Evan receives a call for help while being held captive. He believes himself capable of helping, but given his circumstances this seems impossible.
However, this is Evan Smoek and as he battles the evil that surrounds him, he learns more about himself as well as the man who not only taught him many of his skills, but also has loved him as a son.
Fraught with action and hold your breath thriller scenes, Mr Hurwitz has once again created a story that rolls along seeped with action, menace and peril.
I definitely recommend this book to those of us who so enjoy a book where the suspense pours out on every page and where one will find their ample fill of hair raising events.
Can't wait to find out where Evan is headed in the next book of this mind blowing series. Thank you to Gregg Hurwitz who once again had me turning pages in the middle of the night, Minatour Books, and NetGalley for an opportunity to read this spine tingling book.
This gives readers an idea of how much I enjoyed "The Nowhere Man". I will have more to say after I have had a chance to mentally digest and then review the book.

The Nowhere Man sees Evan kidnapped and held at a mysterious location by a The Evan Smoak books are fast becoming one of my favorite thriller series.
The Nowhere Man sees Evan kidnapped and held at a mysterious location by a mix of eccentric and professional killers, led by Dex — a mute brimming with menace and murderous intent, and Rene Cassaroy — a wealthy and somewhat deranged eccentric whose life goal is the pursuit of eternal youth.
So, how did Evan end up in this predicament? He bought a katana off the internet, the purchase tracked by Rene as part of a broader scheme to kidnap the wealthy and sell them back their lives at great cost.
In Evan, Rene got more than he bargained for. Evan is well written and not without flaws. Through a series of bizarre circumstances, Jarod and Miss Parker find themselves trapped together on a strange island in a life and death situation, out of which come some of the most Jarod reunites with two old friends and unleashes some powerful Centre revelations.
Also Jarod and Miss Parker learn more about their pasts. He will offer his rock solid alibi.
He will realize he's been framed. And he will run. Then he will wake up and start the day over again. Two men, a neat freak and a slob separated from their wives, have to live together despite their differences.
Thomas Veil is a documentary photographer who, in the course of one evening, seemingly has his whole existence erased. It appears as if some mysterious and powerful entity has coerced Veil's family and friends into cooperating in a clandestine plan to annul every trace of him.
Veil is all alone with no option but to begin a desperate, dangerous quest to find out how and why this has happened and most importantly, who is behind this torturous scheme.
This was one of the most brilliantly written shows of the s. Unlike the vast majority of shows, it did NOT hold the audience in contempt and therefore dumb down the show, but created a captivating and surreal treat for those ready to watch something different.
It was similar to the British series The Prisoner early in season one only--after that, The Prisoner lost it's brilliance and momentum very quickly.
The problem is that in nearly every case like this, this is sure proof that the show will not last! Another excellent case was Brooklyn Bridge.
The network also had no faith in this program because once again it was not mind rot--it was exquisitely written and engaging.
Years ago, well-written shows for people who think were possible--the original Mission: Impossible is a good example.
